Residency

PADA offers artists a stimulating space to focus on their practice, work alongside artists from all over the world and engage with the local art scene.

Info

Set in a derelict industrial park with a history dating back to 1885, PADA offers artists time and space to develop their practice through the exploration of technique and process. The residency at PADA welcomes applications from artists in a variety of media for a duration of 1-2 months. We offer artists the possibility to explore practices, concepts, new ideas and materials and to develop a project whilst receiving feedback and support. Participants are also encouraged to propose talks and workshops, and to engage with the local art scene. At the end of each residency period artists will have the opportunity to present their work in the gallery at PADA.

The studios are set within a 1000 sqm warehouse with a partial mezzanine. The facility encompasses nine open-plan studios for artists-in-residence (35sqm per artist) as well as a reading room and library, kitchen and living area and wood and metal workshops with hand and power tools. PADA also boasts a wide network of more specialist fabricators. PADA has a 100sqm gallery space as well as exciting satellite locations throughout the industrial park for interventions, installations and events.

PADA is an artist led non profit association run by a small team. The residency is primarily self led and artists are expected to be self sufficient. The supplementary programme at PADA is designed to introduce artists to the area, to the Lisbon art scene and to encourage dialogue between those in residence.

Applications are done via an Open Call.

Next open call is for residencies taking place during Autumn/Winter 2024/25, and the deadline for applying is 30th April 2024.

The cost for each month of residency is €1500. PADA is a not for profit association and currently receives very limited financial support. We encourage selected artists to apply for funding to cover all costs involved.

At PADA we are working to create a more environmentally sustainable residency and to encourage artistic practices that share this ethos. The application form asks artists to consider this aspect of their practice and describe how it may affect their project at PADA.

Programme

We believe dialogue is important for a rich studio practice, and the residency programme has been developed with this in mind. By organising monthly activities, artists have the opportunity to engage with each other and develop new contacts. The activities include:

  • Presentations and critiques.

  • Curatorial guidance.

  • Final exhibition in the gallery at PADA.

  • Technical assistance and workshop inductions.

  • Visits to museums, galleries and art studios in Lisbon.

  • History Presentation by the Industrial Museum and Tour of the Industrial Park.

  • Opportunity to propose site-specific projects, presentations, workshops and other projects.
